单词 nonillion
释义

nonillionn.adj.

Brit. /nɒˈnɪljən/, U.S. /nɑˈnɪlj(ə)n/
Forms: 1600s 1800s– nonillion, 1700s nonilion.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French nonillion.
Etymology: < French nonillion the cardinal number equal to the ninth power of a million (1484 in Middle French as nonyllion ; now rare) < classical Latin nōnus ninth (see nona- comb. form) + French -illion (in million million n.).
A. n.
Originally (esp. in Britain): the cardinal number equal to the ninth power of a million (1054). Now (originally U.S.): the cardinal number equal to the tenth power of a thousand (1030).For the variation in meaning see billion n. and the etymology there.Apparently misunderstood in quot. 1828 (contrast quot. 1854); the dictionary there quoted has billion and trillion, defined as 1012 and 1018 respectively, but no entries for any higher power of ten (quadrillion, etc.) lower than nonillion.
