Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian ocarina.

Etymology: < Italian ocarina, lit. ‘little goose’, with reference to its shape (1867 or earlier: see note below) < oca goose (a1292; < post-classical Latin auca goose (late 4th or early 5th cent.) < a diminutive of classical Latin avis bird: see aviary n.) + -ina -ina suffix, with -r- connective, after Italian regional (Emilia) ucarenna. Compare French ocarina (1877).The instrument in this form is said to have been invented in the 1850s by Giuseppe Luigi Donati (1836–1925) of Budrio, near Bologna.

A small keyless wind instrument in the form of a hollow egg-shaped (usually terracotta) body with finger-holes and a simple mouthpiece.
