Etymology: < classical Latin occaecātiōn-, occaecātiō the action of concealing from view (2nd cent. a.d.), in post-classical Latin also blindness of mind (Vulgate) < occaecāt- , past participial stem of occaecāre occaecate v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare later occaecate v., occaecated adj. Compare also slightly earlier obcaecation n. (with variation between spellings in obc- and occ- in these words compare note s.v. occaecate v.).
Obsolete.
The action of blinding; blindness. Cf. obcaecation n.
