Etymology: < post-classical Latin octameter, octametrum, adjective (4th cent.) and noun (3rd cent.) < Greek ὀκτάμετρον , noun, in scholia (medieval Greek or earlier) on Hephaestio p. 132 < ancient Greek ὀκτα- octa- comb. form + μέτρον measure (see -meter comb. form¹). Compare French octomètre, noun (1817).With the form octometer compare octo- comb. form and French octomètre.
