Etymology: < octo- comb. form + -archy comb. form, after heptarchy n.
An aggregate of eight districts or kingdoms, each under its own ruler; (British History) the supposed eight kingdoms of the Angles and Saxons in the 7th and 8th centuries. In extended use: government by eight rulers. Cf. heptarchy n.
