Etymology: < post-classical Latin octateuchus the volume containing the first eight books of the Old Testament (4th–5th cent.) < Byzantine Greek ὀκτάτευχος , use as noun (short for ὀκτάτευχος βίβλος ) of ὀκτάτευχος containing eight books < ancient Greek ὀκτα- octa- comb. form + τεῦχος -teuch comb. form. Compare French octateuque (1721). Compare earlier Pentateuch n.Ὀκτάτευχος is attested already in Hellenistic Greek as the title of a work on Persian religion by a certain Ostanes, mentioned by Eusebius (4th cent. a.d.) citing Philo Byblius (1st–2nd cent. a.d.). With the form in octo- compare octo- comb. form, and also post-classical Latin octoteuchus (9th cent. in an isolated attestation), French †octoteuque (1854): see further discussion s.v. octa- comb. form.
