单词 nucleolus
释义

nucleolusn.

Brit. /ˌnjuːklɪˈəʊləs/, /njuːˈklɪələs/, U.S. /n(j)uˈkliələs/
Inflections: Plural nucleoli Brit. /ˌnjuːklɪˈəʊlʌɪ/, /njuːˈklɪəlʌɪ/, U.S. /ˌn(j)ukliˈoʊlaɪ/, /ˌn(j)uˈkliəlaɪ/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nucleolus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin nucleolus small kernel, little nucleus (6th cent. in a medical text; also attested 1724 or earlier in astronomical use) < classical Latin nucleus nucleus n. + -olus -olus suffix. Compare German Nucleolus (apparently introduced by G. G. Valentin, in R. Wagner's Lehrbuch der Physiologie (1838) I. 133; now usually Nukleolus). It is not entirely clear whether the term was first used in German by Valentin (to whom it is usually attributed) or in English by Barry (see quot. 1839). Other German scientists had observed nucleoli, but referred to them with German terms such as Keimfleck (R. Wagner 1835), Kernchen (M. Schleiden 1838), and Kernkörperchen (T. Schwann 1839). N.E.D. (1907) gives only the pronunciation (niuklī·ŏlɒ̆s) /njuːˈkliːələs/.
