Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin odōr- , odor , -ific comb. form.
Etymology: < classical Latin odōr-, odor odour n. + -ific comb. form. Compare post-classical Latin odorificus (14th cent., 1432 in British sources), Middle French, French odorifique which gives out a pleasant smell (16th cent.), producing an odour (1845). Compare earlier odoriferant adj., odorifere adj., odoriferous adj.
