Etymology: Shortened < newbie n.The form noob shows a phonetic respelling. The form n00b perhaps shows the influence of the conventions of leetspeak (see leetspeak n.). It is unclear whether in the following slightly earlier quotation NewB is intended to be read aloud as newbie or newb:1993 NewB Needs help w/ Time Manger in comp.sys.mac.programmer (Usenet newsgroup) 13 Sept.
