单词 novenary
释义

novenaryn.adj.

Brit. /nə(ʊ)ˈviːn(ə)ri/, /ˈnɒvənəri/, U.S. /noʊˈvinəri/, /ˈnɑvəˌnɛri/
Forms: 1500s nouenary, 1600s novenari, 1600s novenarie, 1600s 1800s– novenary; also Scottish pre-1700 novennarie.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin novēnārius.
Etymology: < classical Latin novēnārius consisting of nine, in post-classical Latin also as noun, set of nine (a1190 in a British source), and (in neuter form novenarium ) set of prayers for nine days, novena (1286) < novem nine (see novem- comb. form) + -ārius -ary suffix1. Compare Middle French, French novénaire (adjective) composed of nine units (1572; 13th cent. in Old French as novenere ), proceeding by nines (1598), (noun) the number nine, ninth part (1611 in Cotgrave), Italian novenario (adjective) consisting of nine (16th cent.), (noun) line of nine syllables (1869; compare quot. 1979 at sense A. 1), Spanish novenario (noun) novena (late 16th cent.). N.E.D. (1907) gives only the pronunciation (nǫ·vĕnări) /ˈnɒvənərɪ/.
Now rare.
