Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese nori.
Etymology: < Japanese nori laver (and some related kinds of edible seaweed) (8th cent.).The compound in quot. 1796 apparently represents 18th-cent. Japanese awo-nori (now ao-nori) green laver. Other Japanese compounds are used for individual species, e.g. ama-nori sweet laver.
A Japanese edible seaweed of the genus Porphyra, eaten either dried and stuck together in small sheets, or fresh. Also: green laver (genus Enteromorpha), eaten dried and sprinkled in small flakes on food. Cf. laver n.1 2.
