Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Nōricus.
Etymology: < classical Latin Nōricus of or belonging to Nōricum , probably ultimately < the same base as Noreia , the name of the ancient capital of the later Roman province of Nōricum in present-day Austria + -icus -ic suffix. In sense 2 after German norisch (E. von Mojsisovics 1869, in Verhandl. der Kaiser-Königlichen Geol. Reichanstalt 4 65).

a. Of or relating to Noricum, an ancient Celtic kingdom and later Roman province in Western Europe whose borders roughly corresponded to present-day Austria. Noric Alps n. part of the Eastern Alps in southern Austria, north of the River Drava and west of Graz.
