Etymology: < scientific Latin nudi-, combining form (in e.g. nudiflorus nudiflor n.) of classical Latin nūdus nude adj. Compare French nudi- (in nudibranche nudibranch n.).Found chiefly in adaptations of scientific Latin words, apparently earliest in nudibranchiate adj., nudibranchian n., and related words.
Chiefly Botany and Zoology.
Forming chiefly adjectives with the sense ‘nude’. See also nudibrachiate adj., nudibranch n. and adj., nudibranchial adj., nudibranchian n., nudibranchiate adj. and n.
nudicaudate adj. [after scientific Latin nudicaudatus, in Didelphis nudicaudata (1817 in A. G. Desmarest, after E. Geoffroy St-Hilaire 1803; now placed in genus Metachirus)] Zoology Obsolete rare having a hairless tail.
