nugv.

Brit. /nʌɡ/, U.S. /nəɡ/, Scottish English /nʌɡ/
Forms: 1800s– nugg, 1900s– njugg, 1900s– nogg, 1900s– nug, 1900s– nyig.
Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: Icelandic nugga, Norwegian nugge; Icelandic hnyggja, Norwegian nyggja.
Etymology: Partly < the unattested Norn reflex of the Scandinavian word represented by Icelandic nugga to rub (c1800), Norwegian nugge to push, nudge, rub, scrape (probably < the same Scandinavian base as Norwegian gnugge , Old Swedish gnugga (Swedish gnugga ), all in sense ‘to rub’, perhaps ultimately < an ablaut variant of the Indo-European base of ancient Greek χναύειν to nibble), and partly < the unattested Norn reflex of the Scandinavian word represented by Old Icelandic hnyggja to push or drive back, Norwegian (Nynorsk) nyggja to rub, bump, push (originally a variant of the Scandinavian word represented by Old Icelandic hnøggva to push or drive back, Norwegian (Nynorsk) nøgga to startle, cognate with Old High German hniuwan to knock over, break in pieces (Middle High German niuwen , nūwen ), ultimately < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek κνύειν to scratch (see need n.2)).
Scottish (Shetland).
