Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: levonorgestrel n., implant n.
Etymology: < nor- (in levonorgestrel n.) + -plant (in implant n.).
Pharmacology.
A proprietary name for: a contraceptive device in the form of a set of small capsules which is implanted under the skin of a woman's arm, gradually releasing the hormone levonorgestrel and providing contraception for around five years.

1980 Stud. Family Planning 11 228/1 Norplant has emerged from these contraceptive clinical trials as a promising contraceptive method.
1991 N.Y. Woman June 76/2 Norplant, the new, five-year, under-the-skin contraceptive implant, has been used by over 500,000 women in forty-six countries.
1998 Good Health Mag. Mar. 18/1 Hormonal implants, marketed as Norplant, are also 99 per cent effective and can be left in place for up to five years.
