Compare post-classical Latin Norensis a Norwegian (from 1086 in British sources), a northerner, an inhabitant of northern England (from mid 13th cent. in British sources). Compare earlier Norways n.Attested earlier as a surname: Robertus Norreis (1165–6), Alanus Norreis (1176), Gaufridus le Norreis (1202), etc., although it is unclear whether these are to be interpreted as reflecting the Middle English or the Anglo-Norman word.
