Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French norreis.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Old French norreis, noreis, norais, norrois (c1140 as noreys ; French norrois , norois ), probably < early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic norrœnn Norren n.), with suffix substitution: Anglo-Norman and Old French -eis , -ois -ese suffix. Compare post-classical Latin Norensis a Norwegian (from 1086 in British sources), a northerner, an inhabitant of northern England (from mid 13th cent. in British sources). Compare earlier Norways n.Attested earlier as a surname: Robertus Norreis (1165–6), Alanus Norreis (1176), Gaufridus le Norreis (1202), etc., although it is unclear whether these are to be interpreted as reflecting the Middle English or the Anglo-Norman word.
Obsolete.
A Norwegian. Also: a northerner, an inhabitant of Scotland or northern England.With unchanged plural (cf. quot. c1300).
