Etymology: < note v.2 + -ed suffix1. Compare Old French, Middle French noté important, notable (second half of the 13th cent.), French noté notorious (1671). With sense 2 compare note v.2 1, and post-classical Latin notatus (c1150; from 13th cent. in British sources), Middle French noté (early 15th cent.) having musical notation, Occitan notat containing music (16th cent.).In attributive use in sense 1b the superlative notedst is not uncommon in the 17th cent.
