Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin numismat- , numisma , -ist suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin numismat-, numisma (see numismatic adj.) + -ist suffix, after numismatic adj. or numismatical adj. Compare French numismatiste (1823). Compare numismatician n., and earlier nummist n. N.E.D. (1907) gives only the pronunciation (niumi·zmætist) /njuːˈmɪzmætɪst/.
