Etymology: < post-classical Latin nuncius (10th cent. or earlier), variant of classical Latin nuntius nuntius n. Compare Middle French nuncius (1518). Compare earlier nuntius n., and also nuncio n., nunce n. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (nɒ·nʃiɒs) /ˈnʌnʃ(ɪ)əs/.
