Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French œil-de-perdrix.
Etymology: < French oeil-de-perdrix (of wine) a ruby colour (1605; 1803 as the name of an embroidery stitch) < œil eye (see oeillade n.) + de de prep. + perdrix partridge (end of the 14th cent. in Middle French; 12th cent. in Old French as perdriz , perdix ; < classical Latin perdix perdix n.). Senses 2a and 2b are apparently not paralleled in French.
1. More fully oeil-de-perdrix champagne, oeil-de-perdrix wine. A pale red or rosé wine or champagne; the pink or pale red colour of such a wine.So called after the coral-pink skin surrounding the eye of the red-legged or ‘French’ partridge.
