Etymology: < Middle French, French offuscation action of concealing, obscuring, darkening (1430 as ofuscacion denoting the weakening of the eyes) and its etymon post-classical Latin offuscation-, offuscatio, variant (compare ob- prefix) of obfuscatio obfuscation n. Compare Italian offuscazione (a1406), Spanish ofuscación (1424 as ofuscaçion ), Catalan ofuscació (1805). See etymological note at offuscate v.
