Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish oficina.
Etymology: < South American Spanish oficina factory (1876 or earlier) < Spanish oficina (1734 in sense ‘workshop’; 1543 in sense ‘office’) < classical Latin officīna officina n. Compare Portuguese oficina workshop, factory (14th cent.).
A factory, esp. one producing nitrates, in Spanish-speaking South America or Mexico.
