单词 nuraghe
释义

nuraghen.

Brit. /nʊ(ə)ˈrɑːɡeɪ/, U.S. /nʊ(ə)ˈrɑɡeɪ/
Inflections: Plural nuraghi, nuraghes, nuraghis, unchanged.
Forms:

α. 1800s noraghe (plural), 1800s nuraggi (plural), 1800s nuraggis (plural), 1800s– nuraghe, 1900s– nuragho (irregular).

β. 1800s– nuragh, 1800s– nurhag, 1900s– nurag; N.E.D. (1907) also records a form nouragh.

Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian nuraghe.
Etymology: < Italian nuraghe (plural nuraghi) (although this is apparently first attested later: 1854) < a Sardinian regional word of pre-Roman origin; further etymology uncertain and disputed (see note below). Compare French nuraghe (1866; attested earlier as nurage (1826), and nuragh, nurhag (1840)).In the earliest α forms perhaps after Sardinian; in β forms partly after French. The word is perhaps related to the Sardinian place names Nurra , Nurri , Nurru , and to Sardinian nurra heap of stones, cavity in earth (although these senses are difficult to reconcile). A connection with the Semitic base of Arabic nūr light, fire (see Nuristani n.) is now generally rejected. See further M. L. Wagner Diz. Etimol. Sardo s.v. Nurake. N.E.D. (1907) enters this under nuragh and gives the pronunciation as (nūə·rag) /ˈnʊəræɡ/.
Archaeology.
A type of massive stone tower found in Sardinia, dating from the Bronze and Iron Ages. Cf. talayot n.
