Origin: Probably a borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: Probably < early Scandinavian (compare Swedish regional norna , nyrna , nörna to warn a person secretly by words or gestures), probably cognate with Middle Low German (rare) nōrnen to speak to a person secretly, remind; further etymology uncertain (compare Norn n.2).The word occurs only in Sir Gawain & Green Knight, Cleanness, and St. Erkenwald (see quots.).
Obsolete. rare.
