Origin: A borrowing from Afrikaans. Etymon: Afrikaans oblietjie.
Etymology: < Afrikaans oblietjie < Dutch oblie (see obley n.) + -tjie, variant (after a vowel) of -ie, diminutive suffix.In forms with ou- after French oublie obley n. The following quot. indicates a popular etymological association with oubliette oubliette n.:1954 M. Kuttel Quadrilles & Konfyt 94 Some of the recipes are of hoary antiquity, such as the French Huguenot one called obletjes—a variety of ginger snaps—which are rolled while warm round a form into a pipe shape, and perhaps from their dark colour reminded the French Protestants of those round, paved holes sunk in the stone floors of gloomy French dungeons, known as oubliettes, in which many of their ancestors had languished.

A very thin sweet biscuit cooked in a special iron and rolled while still warm to form a cylinder. Frequently attributive, esp. in oblietjie iron.
