Etymology: Either < obligant n. (see -ancy suffix), or independently < classical Latin obligant-, obligāns, present participle of obligāre oblige v. Compare post-classical Latin obligantia alliance, bond (late 14th cent.; 1573 as oblegantia; both in British sources).
Obsolete. rare.
The fact or quality of being obligatory, obligatoriness.
