Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Occitan. Etymons: French occitan; Occitan occitan.
Etymology: Either < French occitan, occitane, adjective and noun (1886 as occitain ) or < Occitan occitan, adjective and noun (1886), both < post-classical Latin occitanus , adjective (1302 in lingua occitana ) < Old French oc (in langue d'oc Languedoc n.1) + classical Latin -ītānus -itan suffix, perhaps after classical Latin Aquītānus Aquitanian (see Aquitanian adj.). Compare earlier Occitanian adj. and n., Occitanic adj. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives also the non-naturalized pronunciation (ǫksitaṅ) /ɔksitɑ̃/.
