Etymology: < Occitan occitania (a1858) or its etymon post-classical Latin Occitania, the name of the region now generally called Provence (1370; < occitanus (see Occitan adj. and n.) + -ia -ia suffix1) + -an suffix. Compare French occitanien , adjective and noun (1749 as adjective, 1848 or earlier as noun). Compare earlier Occitanic adj., and later Occitan adj. and n.
