Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin obmūtēscere , -ence suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin obmūtēscere to become dumb or mute (see obmutescent adj.) + -ence suffix; compare -escence suffix. Compare post-classical Latin obmutescentia (a1384 in a British source), French †obmutescence (1620).
The state or condition of becoming mute, speechless, or dumb, esp. obstinately or wilfully so.
