Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French octroyer.
Etymology: < Middle French, French octroyer (late 14th cent.; compare Anglo-Norman octrier ), alteration of Old French otroier ottroye v. after classical Latin auctor auctor n. and auctorāre to authorize (see auctoration n.).In sense 2 probably after German oktroyieren (1848 or earlier in K. Marx; 1710 in sense ‘to grant’ (now obsolete)). N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (ǫ·ktroi) /ˈɒktrɔɪ/.
