Etymology: < French nuée ardente (1902: see note below), lit. ‘burning cloud’ < nuée cloud (late 12th cent. in Old French; < nue (see nuance n.) + -ée : see -y suffix⁵) + ardente burning (see ardent adj.).Introduced by A. Lacroix 1902, in Compt. Rend. 135 1305. In La Montagne Pelée et ses Eruptions (1904) 170 Lacroix says that he has since realized that the expression had earlier been used by the inhabitants of San Jorge in the Azores. He also says that by ardent he implies brulant ‘burning’ rather than incandescent ‘glowing’. However the expression nuée ardente is often glossed in English as ‘glowing cloud’ rather than ‘burning cloud’.
