Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German ODESSA.
Etymology: < German ODESSA (probably 1947), acronym < the initial letters of German Organisation der ehemaligen SS Angehörigen, lit. ‘organization of former SS members’, after Odessa, the name of a city and port on the south coast of Ukraine.
An organization arranging the escape from Germany of high-ranking Nazis at the end of the Second World War (1939–45).

1964 Washington Post 22 Nov. a36/3 There are two secret organizations of former SS members (Odessa) whose task is to arrange for the escape of Nazis awaiting trial or serving prison sentences and to shelter them.
1967 tr. S. Wiesenthal Murderers among Us iii. 81 ODESSA..had been set up in 1947. Its name stood for Organisation der SS-Angehörigen (Organization of SS. Members).
1972 F. Forsyth Odessa File ix. 158 By and large Odessa has succeeded in its tasks of impeding West German efforts to hunt down and bring to trial the SS murderers.
