Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French odographe.
Etymology: < French odographe (Étienne-Jules Marey, 1878) < ancient Greek ὁδός way (see -ode comb. form2) + French -graphe -graph comb. form. Compare earlier hodograph n.Étienne-Jules Marey (1830–1904) was also the inventor of the device.
Now historical.
A device for automatically recording the course of a vehicle. Also (in early use): an instrument for measuring the length of stride of a person, animal, etc., and the number of paces taken. See odometer n.
