Compare scientific Latin odonto- (in e.g. Odontognathus : see odontognathous adj. ), French odonto- (formations in which are found from the late 18th cent., as odontologie odontology n.).Found earliest (from the mid 17th cent.) in loans or adaptations from Latin or Greek, as odontalgy n., odontalgia n. Adaptations from French occur from the late 18th cent., as odontoid adj., and probably also odontology n., odontography n. English formations occur from the mid 19th cent.
