Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Odontoceti.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Odontoceti, suborder name (W. H. Flower 1869, in Trans. Zool. Soc. 6 110), alteration of earlier Odontocete (see odontocete n. and adj. and quot. 1864).
Zoology.
The suborder of cetaceans comprising the dolphins, killer whales, sperm whales, and other toothed whales; (with plural agreement) whales of this suborder collectively.
