A genus of long-eared vespertilionid bats of Australia and New Guinea.

1822 W. E. Leach in Trans. Linn. Soc. 13 73 The details of Megaderma Geoff. are also given, not only for the purpose of showing..its affinity with Nyctophilus, but to prove that the characters which Cuvier has attributed to that genus, with some degree of doubt, are perfectly correct.

1851 S. F. Baird tr. J. G. Heck Iconogr. Encycl. II. Zool. 477 The genus Nyctophilus includes only one species, which inhabits the islands of the South Seas.

1883 Encycl. Brit. XV. 410/2 The next two genera are distinguished by the presence of a rudimentary nose-leaf:—Nyctophilus,..with one species, N. timoriensis, from the Australian region; and Antrozous.

1986 Jrnl. Animal Ecol. 55 403 Nyctophilus, Hipposideros and Rhinonicteris are classified as both aerial insectivores and foliage gleaners.

1991 R. M. Nowak Walker's Mammals of World (ed. 5) I. 375/2 Pharotis and Nyctophilus are the only genera of the family Vespertilionidae that combine long ears united at the base with a small, horseshoe-shaped nose leaf.
