Etymology: < classical Latin nymphaeum (also nymfēum) a grotto or shrine dedicated to a nymph or nymphs < ancient Greek νυμϕαῖον , use as noun of neuter singular of νυμϕαῖος sacred to the nymphs (see nymphaea n.). Compare French nymphaeum (1688), nymphéum (1838).In quot. 1770 via French nymphée (1758 in the passage translated; late 15th cent. in Middle French).
Chiefly Archaeology.
A grotto or shrine dedicated to a nymph or nymphs; (a part of) a building designed to represent this.
