Etymology: < classical Latin obsecrāt-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix³) of obsecrāre to beseech, entreat, implore < ob- ob- prefix + sacrāre to make sacred (see sacrate v.), hence lit. ‘to beseech in the name or for the sake of something sacred’. Compare Middle French obsecrer (c1352), French obsécrer (1838).

Now rare.

transitive. To entreat (a person) earnestly; to implore, beseech, supplicate; to beg (a thing). Also occasionally intransitive.In quot. 1767 used in a parody of Johnsonian style.
