Etymology: < ocean n. + -ia suffix1, after French Océanie (1813). Compare earlier Oceanian n. and adj. Compare also earlier Oceanica n.
(A collective name for) the islands and island-groups of the Pacific Ocean and its adjacent seas, including Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia, and sometimes also Australasia and the Malay Archipelago.
