Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: old adj., an element of uncertain origin.

Etymology: < old adj. (see sense 14 at that entry) + a second element of uncertain origin.The second element is probably generally regarded as Nick , pet form of the male forename Nicholas (compare quot. 1734 at scratch n.²). There is no convincing explanation of how this name could have been applied to the Devil, however. A learned theory popular at one time connected it with the name of Niccolò Machiavelli (see Machiavel n.). Compare:1678 S. Butler Hudibras: Third Pt. iii. ii. 76 Nick Machiavel had ne'r a trick, (Though he gave his Name to our Old Nick). It has been suggested (E. Leisi in A. Fischer Hist. & Dial. Eng. (1989) 53–7) that Nick may be a shortened form of Iniquity , another term for the Vice in the early modern English morality play (Old Iniquity is attested: see iniquity n. 4), informally identified with the Devil. Connection with nicker n.¹ is unlikely, as is any connection with the name of St Nicholas (see St Nicholas n.: various of the collocations at that entry have been suggested as origins).
