Etymology: < old adj. + Norse n. Compare German altnordisch, adjective (J. Grimm Deutsche Grammatik (1819) I. lxviii), Swedish fornnordisk, adjective (1819), fornnordiska, noun (1897), fornnorsk, adjective (1849), fornnorsk, noun (1881), referring to both language and culture, Danish oldnordisk.
The North Germanic language spoken in medieval Scandinavia, Iceland, and other parts of northern Europe settled by Norsemen, from which the modern Scandinavian languages are derived. Also: spec. = Old Icelandic n.Old Norse comprised two main dialect groups: (Old) West Norse (the ancestor of Norwegian, Icelandic, and Faroese) and (Old) East Norse (the ancestor of Danish and Swedish).
