Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymons: Japanese o-matsu, wo-matsu.
Etymology: < Japanese o-matsu, lit. ‘male pine’ (earlier as wo-matsu; 1604 as vomatçu in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam Suppl.) < wo- male (referring to its sturdiness) + matsu matsu n. Compare earlier matsu n.
The Japanese black pine, Pinus thunbergii, a valuable ornamental and timber tree. Also called kuro-matsu.
