Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin obstant-, obstāns.
Etymology: < classical Latin obstant-, obstāns, present participle of obstāre to stand in the way of, obstruct, resist, withstand < ob- ob- prefix + stāre to stand (see stand v.); compare -ant suffix1. Compare earlier non-obstant prep., non obstante n., adj., prep., and adv. In quot. 1967 at main sense apparently reflecting an independent reborrowing; compare obstance n.
Originally Scottish. rare after 16th cent.
