Etymology: < classical Latin obstetrīx midwife < obstāre to stand in the way of (see obstant adj.) + -trīx -trix suffix. N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (ǫbste·triks) /ɒbˈstɛtrɪks/.
Obsolete.
