Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Ochronosis.
Etymology: < German Ochronosis (R. Virchow 1866, in Arch. f. path. Anat. u. Physiol. 37 218; now usually Ochronose ) < ancient Greek ὠχρός pale yellow (see ochre n.) + νόσος disease (see noso- comb. form) + -osis -osis suffix.
Medicine.
Abnormal brown pigmentation of tissue (esp. cartilage and ligaments), spec. that resulting from the accumulation of a melanin-like pigment derived from homogentisic acid in the metabolic disorder alkaptonuria.
