Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin octaeteris; Greek ὀκταετηρίδ-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin octaeteris (3rd cent.) or its etymon ancient Greek ὀκταετηρίδ-, ὀκταετηρίς period of eight years < ὀκτα- octa- comb. form + ἔτος year (see etesian adj.). Compare French octaétéride (1732; 1721 as octaedéride).In plural form octaeterides after the ancient Greek plural form ὀκταετηρίδες.
In the ancient Greek calendar: a period of eight years, in the course of which three months of 30 days each were intercalated so as to make the year of 12 lunar months correspond with the solar year.
