Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin octagōnon; Greek ὀκτάγωνον, ὀκτάγωνος.
Etymology: < classical Latin octagōnon, octōgōnon octagon and its etymon ancient Greek ὀκτάγωνον octagon, use as noun of neuter singular of Hellenistic Greek ὀκτάγωνος eight-cornered (although this is first attested later) < ancient Greek ὀκτα- octa- comb. form + stem of γωνία corner, angle (see -gon comb. form). With use as adjective compare Hellenistic Greek ὀκτάγωνος , classical Latin octagōnos , octōgōnos . Compare Middle French, French octogone , noun (1484) and adjective (1547), Middle French octagone , adjective (1596), Italian ottagono , noun (a1572; a1492 as octagono ) and adjective (1547), Spanish octágono , octógono , noun (1733 or earlier).
