Origin: A borrowing from Turkish. Etymon: Turkish oda.
Etymology: < Turkish oda room, chamber, (also) janissary barracks (now historical), probably < Old Turkish ōd fire. Compare odalisque n. and adj.Turkish oda-başı janissary officer (now historical) is recorded earlier in English context in the following:1585 T. Washington tr. N. de Nicolay Nauigations Turkie iii. iii. f. 73v A..person in their language called Oda Bassi, which distributeth and parteth amongst them the offices of the chamber.
In the Ottoman Empire and Turkey: a room or chamber; spec. (now historical) (a) the barracks of the janissaries; (b) a room in a harem; (also, in extended use) the women in a harem collectively.
