Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French odalisque.
Etymology: < French odalisque (1624; also †odalique , in the same source) < Turkish odalık ( < oda oda n. + -lık, suffix expressing function), with epenthetic -s-.The form odalik was also borrowed, directly from Turkish:1798 Lady's Mag. June 265/1 No woman of Turkish birth can be an odalik, or domestic slave. N.E.D. (1902) gives only the pronunciation (ōu·dălisk) /ˈəʊdəlɪsk/.

A female slave or concubine in a harem, esp. in the seraglio of the Sultan of Turkey (now historical). In extended use: an exotic, sexually attractive woman; a representation of a sexually attractive figure in art.
