Etymology: < Yoruba ọba king, ruler (1843 as obba ). Compare Edo ọ́ba the ruler of Benin (1937 as ɔba : see note), French oba (1880). Compare obi n.3The original Edo word for ‘king’ is Ogiso . The title Oba was introduced as a result of the imposition of a Yoruba-related dynasty that supplanted the original Edo rulers in Benin. In early English contexts, Oba was usually translated ‘king’. In quot. 1852, the title of an Egba Oba; among the Egba, there are Obas that owe allegiance to the paramount ruler, the Alake.
West African.
Originally: (the title of) a king of the former West African kingdom of Benin, which flourished from the 14th to the 17th centuries, and is now part of Nigeria. Now also (in weakened sense): (the title of) a local chief in Nigeria.
